About Us

The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic, war-time veterans organization, devoted to mutual helpfulness. It is a not-for-profit community-service organization which now numbers nearly 3 million members, men and women, in nearly 15,000 American Legion posts worldwide. American Legion posts are organized into 55 Departments. One for each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico, and the Philippines. Across the country, The American Legion's nearly 3 million members have been, and remain committed to, this nation's youth. Our records confirm that 14,000 local Posts of The American Legion raised more than $25 million last year to conduct programs for young people in the respective communities, an impressive amount that pales by comparison to the time, talent and effort given by our volunteers to the young people of America.

Post History

History of the Lt. Robert C.A. Carlson  post 1207 of the American Legion, Dept of Illinois, dates back to and including Sept. 27, 1950. Namely the initial meeting of the Carlson Legion Post.

This meeting was held in the basement dining room of the Brad Lynn Cafe (1422 20th Street). Lowell Herbert acted as moderator, Clem Burns acted as Adjutant, Robert Johnson acted as Sgt. of Arms. Both Burns and Johnson were Legion members of the Ken Rock post located on Kishwaukee Street.

At this first meeting it was reported by the acting Adjutant that due to the activity of a few men, nineteen names had been obtained for the application of a  temporary charter, and that the application had been forwarded to the Dept. of Illinois Executive Committee, and that this body had granted the temporary charter as of Sept. 7, 1950.
